I created the installation called "Girift" as part of the "Dreamland: Troy" exhibition in 2018, at the invitation of curator Derya Yücel. In this installation, I tried to convey my research and observations on the ancient city of Troy. Troy is a city that existed from 3000 BC to the Byzantine period and is the subject of various myths. The city is divided into 10 different layers, each containing Coastal Troy Culture, Anatolian character, Roman, Greek, and Byzantine structures, and each layer is built on top of the previous one, forming a 16-meter-high mound structure.
In this project, I took surface and texture photographs of each layer of the ancient city. My goal was to reveal the adobe structures and their uses over time in Troy. In the installation, I used a plexiglass layer for each layer, and displayed a section obtained from the photograph of that layer. When these sections are viewed together from a designated viewpoint, they represent the convoluted state of the ancient city today.
The 3D photo-sculpture I designed was created to give the viewer the feeling of touring the city when viewed up close and the integrated form of the ancient city when viewed from afar. By likening the structure to a circular walking path, I enabled visitors to follow the circular path that I experienced while touring the ancient city. Thus, I aimed to provide an experience of the city by offering a similar research and planning experience for visitors before they visit Troy.
